Changed Lives: Verity's StoryI had to go to chapel every day, which I found very boring Growing up, we went to church at Christmas, and to Sunday school. I went to a Church of England school so I had to go to chapel every day, which I found very boring. But my Mum and some family friends are Christians, so I always felt drawn to the church community. I never really knew why I felt this way, since I thought people who were Christians were geeks! Then I met a Christian at university who clearly wasn’t. She came out clubbing with us, and I didn’t think Christians did that until I met her. We were really close and she became a good friend. After I left university I saw a banner for the Alpha course on a church. I don’t know why but I called the number, and started the course in a local pub! It was full of normal people my age, the kind I could introduce to my friends, and they gave me common sense answers to my questions. I started to realise that God didn’t make prescriptive and unnecessary rules, He just wanted us to live our lives in a way that was best for us and would make us happier. Once I’d finished the Alpha course I knew that God existed and what happened to Jesus was real. However I continued with my old life, drinking late then going to church with a hangover. It was only when I moved cities that I made new friends who didn’t know me as anything other than a Christian. This encouraged me to make a fresh start and get connected with my new church. I started leading an Alpha group and helping with home group, so my change of circumstance really helped turn my life around. Being a Christian means a constant conversation with God. Asking Him for advice and support guides me to make the right decisions, and take risks I wouldn’t have taken before. I also have a support network of other Christians, real friends who I’m happy to talk to without fear of judgement. And its lead me to marrying James so it’s really affected my life!
